Last week there was (another) discussion in the Netherlands about the speed of internet connections. The speed of the connection at consumers at home is often significant slower then the speeds the ISP's (Internet Providers) promise to their customars.  Internet Providers disagreed with the allegation and pointed out their specifications were based on the maximum speeds (that are not always being reached).

On the site http://www.speedtest.net you can test the speed of your own internet connection to check wether the results match the speeds which are descriped in the contract with your ISP.

When the speeds you measure (on different days on different times) deviate of the speeds which you subscribed in your contract, it won't harm to contact your internet service provider to check the couse of this difference.
